Holiday Ornaments

I love how old ornaments look.
I love wooden ones, handmade ones- anything with character.
Not big on the whole holiday hubabaloo but I am big on ornaments.

The felt creatures and acorns I made earlier in the year were made into ornaments for the tree.

 They fit in perfectly.

Felted Acorns

The fox and skunk families made great props.
The hearts are super cute. They came out great.

Needle felted Octopus

The octopus started as just pipe cleaners I bent into shape.
Soon he was covered and looking like a pro octopus. Waving those eight crazy arms around.
A few veins and some of his suckers.
Wicket even got in on the action.
This so far has been five or six hour and he still has a lot of details left.
 Like getting some eyes.

Felt balls

For these felt balls I used the wet method of felting.
Have the water on as hot as you can handle.

Eeep! Hot!
Take the piece of wool roving and a droplet of soap in you hand. Roll and roll some more.
Continue to roll, rinsing your felt ball occasionally.
When your felt ball has gotten as small as it can and your hands are red from the hot water turn your water to cold. This will help shock the wool and your hands. Do one last hot/ cold and continue on to your next felt ball.

Let the felt balls sit out over night or in the hot sun to dry.
String and hang your felt ball garland! I used a bright blue embroidery thread.
Any heavy duty twine would work too.
The felt balls pretty much stay where you place them on the string so there is no need to knot them in place.

Whale garland

I used a whale cookie cutter to create this whale garland.

Here I Stabby. Stab. Stabbed the whale. Do not stab your own fingers. That will hurt.
The fibers start to felt together as you stab. This method is called dry felting.
After enough stabbing the whale will hold its shape.
Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the amount of whales.
A pod of whales is what I have here.
 String and hang the garland.
